Meet Russell

First a little history about myself. I was born and reared in the upstate of South Carolina. I have traveled the United States extensively as I plied my trade as a welder for the past 25 years. I actually started welding in my father's shop when I was too young for the headgear to fit. My father would hold the headgear for me and I would put both hands in one glove to draw a bead at the age of 6.

By the time I was 11, I was welding out of my father's shop after school and on weekends earning some extra spending money. It was around this time that my artistic side started showing up. I could create animals out of steel plates, but didn't know what to do with them once I created them. I spent many hours reading about Greek and Norse Mythology in my formative years. History and mythology were my favorite subjects. This is where I get many of my ideas for how my creations look now.

I went on the road and made a living welding all over the US. The thought of owning my own shop and having the opportunity to create some of the images that were in my head was always a part of my thoughts. About 10 years ago, I had the opportunity to purchase some land in Spartanburg, SC on Gossett Road and jumped at the chance. I started putting back as much as possible so I could eventually build my shop. Once built, the real struggle began. I saved back because I knew it would be quite some time before my shop would start earning any money as with all start up ventures.

Then came the creation of my wind vanes and the decorative wall hangings. This is a passion more than a job. I love creating the animals and breathing life into the lifeless steel I use. I certainly hope you find each of my creations as unique and desirable as I intended.
